Why I write
Free speech is critical to democracy. Why? Because the freedom to speak, however messy, is what drives our society forward. But freedom of speech is not just critical to society. It's critical to the individual. Why? Because free speech is fundamental to freedom of thought. Most people think thought follows speech. And that's true. But speech also follows thought - just ask anyone who's said something they regret in the heat of the moment.
When we restrict our speech, we restrict our thought.
So what do I hope to do with this experiment? I hope to free my thoughts by freeing my speech.
Over the course of the next several weeks, I expect to explore the following areas to discover and define what I think:
- Leadership
- Spirituality
- Philosophy
Leadership
What does it mean to be a leader in the family, community, and workplace? What are the lessons I've learned as I've reluctantly taken on the mantle of leadership in every area of my life? How can we learn from these lessons and continue to develop into people do good for ourselves and others?
Spirituality
What does it mean to follow Jesus? How do I do so without falling into the tropes of Christianity? How do I take the good but have the freedom to leave the bad? How can we together draw closer to Jesus and make our faith our own instead of someone else's?
Philosophy
What does it mean to be a thinker in the modern world? How do we recapture the spirit of contemplation and thought that is so difficult in our distraction filled world? What are fundamental truths that lead to a well balanced and productive life and how do we practice a lifestyle that develops fruit?
I'm excited to see what I discover over this season and I hope my discovery is helpful for others.
Here's to the journey.
